FREDERICK Baer is a double murderer who spent well over a decade on death row – although his death sentence has now been reversed.

The killer appeared on Death Row with Trevor McDonald  in 2013, and recently reappeared as the broadcaster revisited Indiana State Prison five years on. Here is his story.

Who is Frederick Baer?

Frederick Baer, 46, from Indianapolis, is a murderer convicted of killing a woman and her 4-year-old daughter.

Cory Clark, 26, and her daughter Jenna were murdered in their home in rural Madison County, Indiana, in February 2004.

Baer was accused by prosecutors of robbing and attempting to sexually assault Cory, before slashing the throats of her and her young daughter.

The 46-year-old admitted to murder, attempted threat and rape, and his attempt to plea guilty but mentally ill was denied.

Baer was sentenced to death in June 2005, and held in Indiana State Prison.

However, on January 11 this year, the killer's death sentenced was reversed, due to errors in Baer's legal counsel which were judged to have affected the result of the trial, The Herald Bulletin reported.

The federal appeals court found the defence counsel's lack of objection to procedural errors had prevented the jury from considering mitigating circumstances in the killings.

For example, a reference to intoxication was removed from instructions to the jury on what could be considered a defence.

Baer had maintained repeatedly throughout his trial that he was high on methamphetamine when he committed the crimes.

His convictions for murder, attempted rape and theft were allowed to stand and Baer will be re-sentenced.

Back in 2013, the veteran broadcaster's interviews with death row inmates produced moments of truly shocking, groundbreaking television.

Baer was one of the prisoners interviewed during the show, when he candidly told McDonald: "I think I probably deserve to die".

Because of his status as a child killer and the horrific nature of his crimes, the documentary showed Baer as an outcast among his fellow inmates.

Writing for The Daily Mail, the presenter admitted that the encounter left him "terrified", and he "could not wait to get out of his cell".

Five years on, McDonald returned to Indiana State Prison to talk to some of America's most notorious felons to hear about their lives and crimes, and viewers met Baer again.
