An 18-year-old girl has been killed and eight other young people are injured in hospital after an alcohol-related car crash.

Police said a car ran a red light in Clearwater, Florida at about 1am on Saturday morning and collided with another vehicle, WFLA reports.

The drivers of both cars are suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, according to authorities.

Donavan Patterson, 18, was behind the wheel of the Dodge Caliber that allegedly ran the red light. 

He had four passengers inside his car, including 18-year-old Jocelyn Kaila Schirmer who was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Schirmer was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, according to the accident report.

Two 15-year-old girls in the car were critically injured. The driver and Schirmer's 17-year-old brother have serious injuries.

The Ford pick up truck was being driven by 22-year-old Dalton Cox. His girlfriend Megan Bortolis was also in the car and suffered minor injuries

Police said Patterson crashed into a Ford pick up truck being driven by 22-year-old Dalton Cox and caused the vehicle to overturn.

Cox had three passengers in his car, including his girlfriend 21-year-old Megan Bortolis and friend Victoria Rowe. He was severely injured, while his female passengers only suffered minor injuries. 

All eight injured people were taken to various hospitals.

Authorities say charges and results of the toxicology report are pending.
