Emma Watson and her brother Alex Watson are siblings, business partners and best friends.
The Harry Potter actress and her younger brother Alex, who are just two years apart, were born in Paris before the family moved back to England. Their parents, Chris and Jacqueline, divorced in 1995.
The siblings are very close. Alex shared a sweet post to Emma on Instagram in honor of her 33rd birthday, where he shared the "pros" of having her as an older sister — which include making him more stylish, laughing at his jokes and being a fan of his art.
Here's what to know about Emma Watson’s brother, including what the actress has said about him over the years.
He’s a former model
Alex is a former model and actor. He starred in a campaign with his sister Emma for Burberry for the label's Spring 2010 collection, as well as for Silhouette eyewear, according to The Independent. He shared with the newspaper that his modeling career was the most surprising thing that’s ever happened to him.
“I guess it would be getting scouted by storm and my whole modeling career kicking off,” he said. “I never thought I’d have the potential to do anything like that or thought about myself in that way. So it is pretty surprising.”
He later told Financial Times, “I was being pushed towards modeling or acting.”
He studied philosophy
Alex briefly studied philosophy at Bristol, according to Financial Times. In an interview with The Independent, he shared the one person he would like to meet from history was Socrates. “I’m studying philosophy at the moment, it’s really interesting, but the stuff is overwhelming so I’d probably ask him to explain it a bit more,” he said.
They co-founded a gin company
Emma and Alex started a sustainable gin company called Renais (which means “rebirth” in French.) The gin is described as “distilled from upcycling French wine-pressed grapes, (including from the Watson family vineyard) and uses the finest local ingredients such as pressed, organic, hand picked Grand Cru grapes, and Kimmeridgian terroir, unique to the region.” It is also a carbon-neutral product.
He had a previous career in the hospitality and alcohol industry
Alex found employment in pubs and restaurants when he was 16. “I fell in love with hospitality,” he shared with Financial Times.
He also previously worked in the alcohol industry for Diageo, working with brands like Tanqueray gin, Ketel One vodka and Johnnie Walker whisky before he started Renais with Emma. He shared he did “third-space marketing: things like supper clubs, cocktail masterclasses, building bars, curating the menus. It was my dream job. But I think that once you have an idea like Renais, you can’t un-have it.”
They attend award shows together
Recently, Emma and Alex attended the Soho House Awards together, where they accepted an award for Breakthrough Entrepreneur for Renais, which will be sold at U.K. Soho Houses.
Alex shared photos from the awards on Instagram, where he and Emma shared a cocktail together.
The two have attended events together in the past, including a match at Wimbledon (and an appearance in the Evian VIP Suite) in July 2023. Alex has also supported Emma’s Harry Potter career, attending the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 with her back in 2010, as well as the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix premiere back in 2007.
They share a love of music
Emma and Alex both love music. In an Instagram post for Renais, Emma wrote, “One of the many things @alex.s.watson and I have bonded over in the last few years is our love for music."
She added that while they had differing tastes (from The Spice Girls to The Offspring), they now like more of the same jams, and “now nothing makes us happier than making dinner and sharing what we've been listening to lately.” They shared a Spotify playlist they co-created for their fans to listen to.
He loves to travel
Alex is a world traveler, and often shares his trips on Instagram. His travels have taken him to Mexico, Courchevel, France, New York City and California.
Emma appreciates his humor
One thing Emma appreciates about Alex is his sense of humor. In a touching post on Instagram in honor of her 33rd birthday, Emma shared, “thank you to my brother @alex.s.watson for helping me find the most challenging things, with time, incredibly funny.”
He encouraged Emma to start directing
Emma directed her first advertising campaign for Prada in 2022, and was encouraged to do so by Alex.
“People always told me I should direct and produce, even when I was on Potter,” she told Financial Times. “I was worried it was just technical, not creative, and I couldn’t bring what I think is probably my skill set. It was only Alex coming to me with this, and friends asking for favors – ‘I need to do a photo shoot’ or ‘I’m making a video’ – that made me realize I actually know quite a lot about that.”
Alex added, “You spent more time as a kid on a film set than you did in school.”
